SBT Making Strides in Banking

SBT Making Strides in Banking

Jyah Chatfield, proud young Gunditjamara man, is one of AFL SportsReady’s standout First Nations School-Based Trainees, making impressive strides in banking.

In his second year of a School-Based traineeship (SBT) at ANZ Warrnambool. Jyah is pursuing a Certificate II in Workplace Skills while completing his Year 12 VCE Vocational Major pathway at Warrnambool College.

Jyah’s journey is a remarkable example of the opportunities and growth provided by AFL Sportsready’s Warumilang Program.

Kimberley Tebble, Jyah’s supervisor at ANZ Warrnambool. Has witnessed firsthand the positive impact of having a School-Based Trainee in their branch.

We have really loved having Jyah be a part of our team.

The benefit of having a School-Based Trainee like Jyah is that it brings a younger point of view into our team discussions, which can really help when we are serving customers.

A younger demographic can have a completely different type of view in regards to finances than our current staff.

Kimberley also emphasised how the traineeship has been instrumental in building Jyah’s confidence and work-based skills.

It teaches good work ethic and exposes them early to the opportunities that are available.

Jyah has proven to be an invaluable support resource for the branch.

He has demonstrated some really good values not only to us as a team but also to our customers.

Jyah shows empathy, knowledge and he has a good understanding of his day-to-day duties. He goes out of his way to contribute to our team and will support us where needed.

He even takes on extra shifts over the holiday period to help.

The growth Jyah has shown since starting with ANZ Warrnambool has been significant.

Jyah has come leaps and bounds from when I first met him. From being quiet and sitting behind the counter to now jumping up the front of our branch with a big smile. Now, being the face of ANZ Warrnambool to greet our customers as they first walk in.

The support provided by AFL SportsReady has been pivotal in Jyah’s success.

The AFL SportsReady program has been amazing!

I cannot thank them enough for all their support and guidance throughout Jyah’s journey. They involve both myself and Jyah in everything. We all know what is expected and when, and the support on a regular catch-up has been astonishing. It’s a program where we both feel very valued and respected and we know we can reach out for assistance at any time.

When asked if she would recommend the AFL SportsReady program to other organisations.
Kimberley’s response was a resounding yes!

The program is a good way to help Trainees understand the working industry and build some really good skills for both them and the people they are around.

It’s a great way to develop relationships, promote career development and encourage their personal growth through early exposure to skills gained in the workplace.

Jyah’s experience at ANZ Warrnambool has equipped him with essential workplace skills and opened the door to a potential career in the banking industry post-traineeship.

My future ambitions are to be a positive role model in my community, someone for the kids to look up too as i’ll be the first in my family to finish year 12 to then go on and find full time employment. – Jyah

His journey is an inspiring example of how dedication, support and the right opportunities can pave the way for a successful and fulfilling career.
