AFL Game Development in Queensland
Zoe Tame is completing a year-long Game Development Traineeship with AFL Queensland in Brisbane’s South. While pursuing her Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics, and Recreation, she uncovered an unexpected passion for AFL and community programs.
When I first heard about the role through my local footy club,
I wasn’t specifically looking for a job in the AFL.
I’d done some coaching, but it was for a different sport. Once I got started, I realised how much work goes into growing the game here in Queensland.
She is an active footy player herself. Zoe has seen the rise of women’s footy at the community level firsthand.
In her third season with the Sherwood Magpies. She’s watched her club expand from one under-17s girls’ team to multiple teams across divisions.
Winning the flag this year was huge for us.
When I started, we were the only under-17s team. Now there’s so much demand we need two teams for each age group.
Seeing that growth is exciting.
Queensland might not share Victoria’s deep AFL traditions, but Zoe has been amazed by the size of the local programs.
Seeing over 150 kids join Auskick sessions during school holiday programs has been an incredible experience.
The AFL is growing so fast here and I knew it was picking up. But seeing how big the programs are in person, especially the joy kids and parents get out of it—has been eye-opening.
Throughout her traineeship, Zoe has made an effort to connect with different departments to learn how each one supports the AFL’s growth.
I’ve tried to get involved outside my day-to-day role.
You get to see how many parts make up the bigger picture and the AFL Queensland team has been supportive all along. Especially at the beginning when I was still finding my feet.
For young people considering a similar path, Zoe’s advice is simple:
Take every opportunity.
There’s so much to get involved in and if you’re open to learning.
You’ll discover things you never expected.
Plus, there’s a lot of fun to be had along the way!
As the AFLW grows, stories like Zoe’s highlight the doors opening for young people. Especially those keen to be part of the AFL’s future in the Sunshine State.
I know that taking on this traineeship straight after high school was 100% the right decision.
It’s given me a foot in the door and a real sense of what I want to do next.
