At AFL SportsReady, we’re putting community at the heart of everything we do. Our Schools Program is more than just a pathway to employment – it’s a powerful way to build connection, opportunity and long-term impact within your school.
When your school hosts a trainee, you’re not only supporting the next generation – you’re strengthening ties between teachers, students and alumni. Many of our trainees go on to become educators themselves, returning to the classroom with purpose and passion.
It’s a cycle of support that starts with one opportunity and creates a ripple effect across the whole community.

-
Traineeships don’t just fill today’s roles, they inspire tomorrow’s teachers. Many of our trainees discover a love for education and return as qualified staff, helping secure the future of your school community.
-
Our trainees step in to handle essential administrative and classroom support, reducing pressure on your staff. That means more time for teachers to do what they do best: educate and nurture the next generation.
-
From leading sports programs to mentoring younger students, trainees bring fresh energy and relatable role models into the school environment. This connection enhances student engagement and builds a stronger sense of community.
-
By investing in traineeships today, you’re not only building a pipeline of skilled, passionate people ready to step into key roles tomorrow, you’re also strengthening ties with alumni who often return as trainees or educators. This creates a loyal network that continues to support and sustain your school well into the future.

FAQ’s
-
AFL SportsReady is a national not-for-profit organisation. It was founded by Kevin Sheedy AO in 1994 to support young Australians through on-the-job training and education. Initially partnering with AFL Clubs, AFL SportsReady now works across a wide range of industries including business, education, finance, retail, sport, IT and the arts.
-
AFL SportsReady is the legal employer, however the trainee will be “hosted” at your school where they will work day-to-day. As the legal employer, AFL SportsReady takes care of all administrative matters including payroll, superannuation, WorkCover and the arrangement of the educational components of the traineeship.
-
AFL SportsReady will consult directly with you on your school’s needs and the qualities you are seeking in a trainee. We will then shortlist applicants based on the identified criteria and present these to you for your consideration and your final decision. You have the final say in who gets the job.
-
AFL SportsReady will work with the host employer to determine the most suitable qualification based on the duties the trainee will undertake. Trainees attend regular training sessions led by an educator from our RTO SportsReady Education or one of our RTO partners. These sessions are designed to support trainees in working towards their qualification.
-
Each trainee is assigned an Employment Coach and an Educator to provide ongoing support throughout the traineeship. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees also have a First Nations Mentor.
