Calling all First Nations high school students: get a head start in your career with a School-Based Traineeship.

As part of your School-Based traineeship, you will complete a Certificate II in Workplace Skills (or Certificate III in Business in some states).

The qualification is fully funded.

Want hands-on experience and a little extra support to help get you through year 11 or 12? Why not try a School-Based Traineeship? It’s open to all First Nation students and combines paid work and training. Kickstart your career by working with a company one day a week while finishing high school.

Best of all you’ll get a First Nations mentor to support you through the program!

    The program is open to all students who are:

    • Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander peoples
    • At least 15 years of age
    • Students completing their VCE, VCAL, TCE, or HSC

    • Work one day a week while completing year 11 and 12
    • Earn a salary (the national training wage)
    • Gain essential work experience
    • Gain credit towards your VCE or VCAL certificate
    • Receive ongoing career support through an AFL SportsReady First Nations Mentor
    • Potential to explore career opportunities with your host employer upon completion of the traineeship
    • Additional nationally recognised qualifications may also be offered pending the host organisation

    Trainees are paid at the National Training Wage Award.

    All Trainees are assigned a Field Officer and Educator to support you throughout your traineeship.

    First Nation Australians can face many challenges at the beginning and throughout their career journey. To help mitigate any difficulties, we provide all our First Nation Cadets with AN EXCLUSIVE FIRST NATIONS MENTOR that provides personal, cultural and career pathway support.
