Turning Point with School Sports Traineeship

Turning Point with School Sports Traineeship

Devon Timewell first heard about AFL SportsReady’s traineeship program back in January. At the time, he was uncertain about his next steps after graduating high school, as he didn’t have a job lined up. However, everything changed when he interviewed for a Sports Traineeship at St Joseph’s Ferntree Gully.

I heard back from the school within an hour of my interview.

Devon is currently completing a Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics, and Recreation. The program’s sport-focused nature immediately attracted him, aligning perfectly with his passion for cricket, footy and basketball.

I wanted to work in and around sport. Ideally, I’d like to work for a club and contribute to their sports programs.

The opportunity to gain practical experience while working full-time in a school’s sports department made the traineeship an ideal fit for him.

One of Devon’s initial challenges was navigating his close age proximity to the students, having just finished Year 12 himself.

Some of the students tried to push my professional boundaries by asking silly questions. I had to show my maturity by setting clear boundaries.

Over time, the students learned to respect his professional role. Devon credits this experience for helping him grow and mature.

Devon finds it beneficial that he is completing his traineeship at a school he did not attend as a student.

It was great to have a fresh start where I am only seen as a staff member.

Balancing coursework with his practical responsibilities has been challenging. But he’s navigating it well.

The best part of the traineeship is the amount of support provided by both my Host Employer and AFL SportsReady.

My AFL SportsReady Field Officer Brad and Educator Tim are always quick to respond when I need help, usually within an hour.

Devon’s traineeship has really impacted his personal and professional growth.

I have definitely matured, which has positively affected both my professional and personal life.

A turning point came when he took the initiative to lead and direct Year 8 students during a safety excursion to the beach.

My mindset has also changed. I think more like a teacher now, which has improved my awareness of things like safety and risk.

From an uncertain high school graduate to a confident and mature professional. Devon’s traineeship highlights the significant impact of AFL SportsReady’s traineeship program.
