Now Shaping the Next Generation

Now Shaping the Next Generation

Lauryn Miller’s dedication to sports education at Cranbourne Secondary College may also reflect the impact of AFL SportsReady’s traineeship program. As a former Trainee herself, Lauryn has come full circle. Now shaping the next generation of sports leaders, including Ezel Duyar, who recently won AFL SportsReady’s Trainee of the Year for Victoria. Lauryn’s experience and passion have been instrumental in Ezel’s success and the overall enhancement of the school’s sports programs.

My role as the Sport Coordinator involves overseeing all aspects of interschool sports carnivals and other related events. I work with the Casey South division within the SSV area of school sports, managing term sports and our school carnivals.

Lauryn’s journey with AFL SportsReady began in 2012 when she completed her traineeship at Woodleigh School. This experience provided her with invaluable insights into the program’s potential.

Ezzy is our first Trainee here at Cranbourne Secondary. We had discussed the possibility of getting a Trainee, especially since eight other schools in our division had Trainees.

Being an AFL SportsReady Alumni and knowing how other schools utilised their Trainees, we saw the potential benefits.

The program was something the previous Head of Physical Education (PE) really pushed for when he joined our school, having had a Trainee at his previous school. Their knowledge of how to set up and utilise a Trainee was incredibly beneficial. I didn’t have the process knowledge, but together, we made it happen.

The addition of Trainees has significantly transformed Lauryn’s work environment.

I used to run around the school managing everything myself for four to five years before we got our Trainees.

Now, with two Trainees, I still feel like there’s never enough time, but the help is invaluable. Ezel’s role here as a trainee is quite different from my experience at a private school. It’s fascinating to see the diversity in how the program can be implemented across different schools.

Ezel’s contributions to the school have been remarkable.

One key moment in her traineeship was when she had to independently run a sports day event because I couldn’t attend. Ezel managed the day completely on her own, showcasing her exceptional organisational and leadership skills.

Lauryn’s influence extends beyond her role as a leader. Her experience as an AFL SportsReady Trainee has given her a unique perspective on the program’s value.

Knowing the benefits of the traineeship from my own experience, I was eager to see it implemented here. It has made a world of difference.

The program’s success at Cranbourne Secondary is a testament to the dedication of both our trainees and the staff who support them.

Lauryn’s journey from Trainee to mentor has empowered the current Trainees to achieve outstanding success and enriched the entire Cranbourne Secondary College community.
