Lucy Launching a Career in Events

Lucy Launching a Career in Events

While studying for her Certificate III in Business, Lucy Saunders has stepped into the role of Events Assistant Trainee with the City of Sydney, gaining a front-row seat to the planning and execution of some of the city’s biggest events.

Though still early on in her traineeship, Lucy’s passion and curiosity are already paying off, with her hands-on experience laying the foundations of an exciting career ahead in the events industry.

My time at City of Sydney has been wonderful so far. I’ve already learnt some super valuable skills through working with different systems that I previously hadn’t even heard of before.

It’s been so interesting to see the behind-the-scenes work that goes towards some of Sydney’s most iconic events.

To be involved with the planning and preparation of it all has been very insightful.

While the event season hasn’t kicked off just yet, Lucy is eagerly waiting for the opportunity to be part of large-scale experiences. In the meantime, she’s gaining a great understanding of what it takes to bring events to life through the administration and recruitment side, which she finds most enjoyable.

As we prepare for the busy season, it’s been so eye-opening and interesting to see all the processes that need to be in place for an event. At the moment, there’s a lot of preparation, from progress meetings to recruitment.
I’ve loved being involved in this process of getting tasks prepared for the new starters and being involved in the interview process. It’s nice to see all of these wonderful people who apply for the events jobs all from different backgrounds and experience levels.
I can’t wait to be involved with events such as Art & About, New Years Eve (NYE), Sydney Lunar Festival (SLF) and many more.

I’ve also recently started semi-chairing Mardi Gras meetings.

Two of Mardi Gras organisers have been taking me under their wing to help me develop, which has been amazing.
Looking ahead, Lucy is excited about the growth opportunities her traineeship provides, including engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
I can definitely see potential for me to grow, with so many skills and development over this traineeship. It’s super exciting to think that by the end of it, I’ll be able to come away and know that there has been a real change from where I started to where I end up.
Working with the NYE team I’ve had the opportunity to liaise with stakeholders, such as those involved with the fireworks, pylons and performances. I’m sure I’ll be meeting heaps of people once the event season commences. We’ve got so many staff members that work with us, so I have no doubt that I’ll soon be able to put faces to all of the names I’ve seen through working in recruitment.
Supported by her supervisor and Business Operations Coordinator Sarah Hotchin, Lucy is looking forward to making the most of it by pursuing her interest in event administration.
Sarah and I had my development check-up last week and we spoke through the different aspects of the job that I have enjoyed and what I would love to learn and be involved in, which I think will be the admin side of things.
I think there’s so many job opportunities that can come from this traineeship if I really apply myself. I can’t wait to see all the different aspects of events and jobs included – hopefully by the end I’ll know what career path I would like to go down.
