Umpire’s Call Leading to Traineeship

Umpire’s Call Leading to Traineeship

Miles Maclennan’s journey as the Club Development & Experience Administration Trainee at AFL Queensland Yeronga reflects his commitment and ability to make the most of every opportunity. Initially, Miles was inspired by a friend’s positive experience with AFL SportsReady’s traineeship program, leading him to apply.

Despite being familiar with the AFL Queensland team—having previously worked with the umpiring department and volunteered at various events—he knew the role would provide new challenges.

Reflecting on his initial experience, Miles admits;

I had already done some work for AFL Queensland.

But starting the traineeship was a different ballgame.

One of the most defining moments came in his first week, which he describes as his busiest time so far.

It was Round 1, the busiest time for umpiring, coaching and registering players for the season.

It was definitely my sink or swim moment.

I was told if I could handle that week, I’d be alright—and I made it through.

Miles quickly adapted to the fast-paced environment and began working across four different teams, further broadening his experience. Networking became an integral part of his traineeship.

I came into this knowing only the team I had previously worked with.

Now, I’ve networked with other teams like the Metro North Team and have met so many helpful and friendly people along the way.

Beyond practical skills, Miles feels the traineeship has significantly developed his intangible qualities, especially communication and professionalism.

You get so much more mature in an environment where everyone is experienced and professional.

My traineeship has helped me grow so much, not just in terms of knowledge but also in the way I interact with people.

For someone who wasn’t initially leaning toward university after high school. This traineeship became an invaluable path for Miles.

I didn’t particularly want to go to uni.

I’ve always been involved in footy and sport, so any chance to work in that space, while also getting a feel of what business is like, was too good to pass up.

It’s the most valuable choice I’ve made throughout high school and after finishing.

Leading up to the traineeship opportunity,

he was actively involved in organising and coaching at various carnivals, making his presence known.

This experience carried over into his current role, where he regularly contributes to coaching and umpiring initiatives.

When asked to advise those considering a traineeship, Miles says;

Just do it. A traineeship offers so much practical experience, especially for those who aren’t keen on the traditional university route.

You learn, grow and get hands-on experience in a professional setting. It’s the best of both worlds.

Through the support of AFL SportsReady and his colleagues at AFL Queensland. Miles continues to thrive in his role, making an impact on his personal development and the broader AFL community. His story demonstrates how traineeships can open doors and lead to new possibilities.
