Move Across the Country for the Win
In the bustling corridors of Melbourne’s Department of Transport and Planning, you’ll find Proud Noongar Woman, Shaliece Farmer. Shaliece, who moved across the country from Western Australia to Melbourne, was recently honoured as AFL SportsReady’s First Nations Trainee of the Year for Victoria. Her story is one of overcoming challenges and making a mark while staying true to her cultural roots.
Shaliece’s adventure began with a leap into uncertainty – flying across the country from Western Australia for a job interview.
I got told I had the interview and then went alright hopefully I get the job and then flew from WA to Melbourne,
– she recalls.
Despite being miles away from her home, Shaliece accepted a role within the Department’s First Peoples Self Determination and Reform Division (FPSDR).
From day dot, Shaliece made her presence felt. As Trainee, she was embraced as a vital part of the team, with her contributions surpassing expectations.
From the very beginning of my traineeship at the Department of Transport and Planning, I was always treated as a valued member of the team.
I think people sometimes forgot that I was a Trainee.
Her supervisor, Denise Cameron, describes her as ‘the glue of the team,’
a testament to her impact.
By tackling the educational component head-on. Shaliece completed a Certificate IV in Business within just six months, showcasing her determination.
I am very grateful to have had such great support from my team including Tim (Right: Executive Director, First Peoples Self Determination Reform), and AFL SportsReady’s Field Officer Yvonne and First Nations Mentor Ralph.
Throughout her traineeship, Shaliece embraced every opportunity for growth. From coordinating staff conferences to supporting senior executives, her role was dynamic and demanding. However, her involvement in cultural events truly showcased her passion for Indigenous representation.
From NAIDOC Week to National Reconciliation Week, Shaliece organised events that celebrated Indigenous culture and fostered dialogue within the Department.

Her nomination for an internal support role within the Department is a testament to her leadership potential and integrity.
Today, Shaliece’s journey continues as a Business Support Officer within the Department. In this role, she remains committed to furthering the FPSDR’s initiatives.
It was a one-year traineeship and when I finished, they created a role for me for the next three years!
In just one year, Shaliece was able to secure employment away from home. Showcasing resilience also her story highlights dedication and cultural pride within the workplace. Moving across the country for her role, she excelled in becoming a key team member and was recognised for her commitment to First Nations representation.
