Proud Arrernte man, Stephen Obale’s story is an epic example of the power traineeships. The first few months of his traineeship in Administration with Liberty Financial. Stephen made the move to AFL SportsReady’s HQ at Victoria Park.
Transitioning over allowed him to experience various departments including Administration, Education, Employment, Business Development and working back with the Marketing Team too!
Reflecting on his journey, Stephen was initially seeking employment when he stumbled upon the Warumilang traineeship opportunity with AFL SportsReady.
Despite facing challenges, Stephen’s positive attitude and determination led him forward.
During his traineeship, Stephen worked with supportive teams who provided him with valuable experience and guidance. This hands-on experience was complemented by the educational component of his traineeship, where he completed a Certificate III in Business.
This formal qualification enhanced his skills and knowledge in business administration, further enhancing his professional development.
Throughout his traineeship, Stephen found not only professional guidance but also personal mentorship from AFL SportsReady Mentor Ralph.
Ralph’s support extended beyond the confines of Stephen’s traineeship, as he introduced him to the Fitzroy Stars AFL team mid-last year. The Fitzroy Stars Football and Netball Club, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander club, became a significant part of Stephen’s life and he has been actively involved since then.
Additionally, Ralph facilitated invaluable networking opportunities for Stephen by arranging visits to the Carlton Football Club. Reflecting on his experience, Stephen shared;
Ralph showed me around Ikon Park, where I got to see a VFL practice Carlton vs Geelong. I also had the opportunity to meet a lot of the staff, players and the Head Coach.
Ralph’s mentorship has helped Stephen make the most out of his traineeship, enriching his personal growth and expanding his professional network.
When asked about his favourite part of the traineeship, Stephen highlighted;

Stephen discovered his capacity for learning and adaptation through the program. He emphasises the importance of setting career goals and believes his traineeship experience has prepared him well for future opportunities.
Now, Stephen has launched into his next chapter by commencing a second traineeship at the Department of Transport and Planning as the Employment Pathways Advisor (Peoples and Culture).
It’s here, he aims to further his professional development while completing a Certificate IV in Business.
