Award-Winning Trainee Supporting Schools

Award-Winning Trainee Supporting Schools

Mitchell Saba’s journey from a high school graduate to AFL SportsReady’s Trainee of the Year for South Australia has been inspiring. Supporting schools has been his main venture with 2x traineeships now under his belt.

In 2022, Mitchell completed his Certificate III in Sport and Recreation at Immanuel College. The following year, in 2023, He continued his professional growth at Tenison Woods Catholic School. Where he undertook a Certificate III in Classroom Education Support, further developing his skills within schools.

Reflecting on his experience, Mitchell shared a memorable moment when he found out about his award:

I still remember the day clearly. I was on my way out of school to pick up some trophies we were getting engraved when the principal stopped me. He said there was an important meeting about basketball and I was clueless about what was going on. When I walked into the staff room, I saw streamers everywhere, and then (AFL SportsReady’s Employment Coach) Craig Berry walked in.

That’s when it clicked—I’d won the award. It was such a surreal feeling. I called my parents right away to share the good news. I was genuinely grateful.

Mitchell’s passion for sports and education has been evident throughout both his traineeships. At Immanuel College, he immersed himself in the world of PE, assisting in classes and getting involved in various sports activities. He enjoyed the administrative and hands-on aspects of the role, from setting up equipment and helping with lessons to coordinating sports events and managing data.

Since transitioning to Tenison Woods Catholic School, Mitchell took on a dual role as an Education Support Officer and Sports Coordinator. He appreciated the smaller school environment, where he could engage more closely with students and staff.

At Tenison Woods, it’s a more personal experience. I work with students in the classroom, supporting their learning and also manage the sports programs. It’s a great mix and I enjoy being able to do both.

Throughout his traineeships, Mitchell received invaluable support from his supervisors and the AFL SportsReady team.

The guidance and encouragement I received were incredible. My supervisors always made time for me, providing feedback and helping me develop new skills. The AFL SportsReady staff were also fantastic, offering resources and support whenever I needed it. Everyone really helped me grow professionally and personally.

He highlighted the importance of communication and building connections, skills he honed during his traineeships.

Working in sport, communication is key. I’ve been able to network with a lot of people, whether it’s students, parents or other staff members.

These connections have been invaluable and I think that’s one of the biggest benefits of the traineeship program.

Looking back, Mitchell is grateful for the opportunities his traineeships provided.

Starting straight out of high school, I knew I wanted to work in sport.

These traineeships have given me real-world experience and a network of contacts.

It’s been a great foundation for my career.

Now employed full-time at Tenison Woods Catholic School, Mitchell continues to make a positive impact on the students and the school community. His journey from a recent graduate to a recognised AFL SportsReady’s Trainee of the Year for South Australia. Is a result of his hard work and dedication.

As he puts it;

I’ve learned so much and grown a lot. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m excited for what’s next.
