A dedicated Community Development Officer at AFL Tasmania, Candice Belbin, has been recognised as AFL SportsReady’s Tasmania’s Trainee of the Year.
The secret surprise award presentation took place in the small regional office on the North West Coast of Tasmania. With a few key people in attendance, the intimate gathering was a fitting setting for celebrating Candice’s achievements.
Candice, currently studying Physiotherapy at the University of South Australia, had flown home just the day before for a brief visit. She called into her old work office when colleagues, including supervisor Barry Gaby and AFL SportsReady’s State Manager Tracey, surprised her with the award.
During her traineeship, Candice worked tirelessly to boost football participation across various age groups.
She led primary/ high school sessions, coached representative teams, assisted in talent identification and organised statewide clinics. All while balancing these responsibilities with her studies, Candice exhibited remarkable time management and dedication.
Reflecting on her experience, Candice expressed her surprise and gratitude for the recognition.
She credited support from Barry, AFL SportsReady’s field officer Chris Pearcey and colleagues at AFL Tasmania for her success.
This support network provided the guidance and mentorship crucial to her development.
Barry, who nominated Candice for the award, spoke highly of her commitment and professionalism. He highlighted her punctuality, organisation, and proactive approach. Barry praised Candice’s ability to manage challenges, particularly in school settings, where she dealt with behavioural issues with a positive and professional attitude.
Her impact extended beyond her immediate responsibilities, inspiring young girls to participate in football and encouraging other females to consider careers in sports.
Candice’s influence was evident in the increased participation and enthusiasm for footy among girls in the North West community. She went above and beyond, supporting schools without football teams and coaching outside regular hours, showcasing her dedication to the sport.
Candice’s traineeship has not only prepared her for her future career but also left a positive impact on AFL Tasmania. Her commitment and positive attitude set a high standard for future Trainees. As she continues her studies in Physiotherapy, Candice remains grateful for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped her journey so far.
“If I were to go back in time, I would definitely choose to do the traineeship again and would encourage anyone considering it to take the role…”
Candice shared.
“The traineeship is a great way to gain a qualification while advancing your skills, even if you aren’t sure what your next step will be.”
Barry summed up Candice’s impact succinctly:
Candice has left our workplace in a better place. Her positive attitude, willingness to help and dedication have benefited everyone at AFL Tasmania.
I couldn’t have asked for a better Trainee, and I am really proud of her accomplishments.
Candice Belbin’s story is a great example of how passion and hard work can lead to recognition and success. Inspiring others to follow in her footsteps with dedication and enthusiasm.
