Mad North Melbourne supporter Julia Gauci wanted nothing more than to work in the sporting industry. Following the club religiously, her heart was always set on working within the AFL and her dreams came true five years ago when she applied for a traineeship at AFL SportsReady.

Julia first came across AFL SportsReady in year 9 at an expo and knew right away this was going to be the gateway into the industry. After year 12 she jumped at a traineeship opportunity to work with the AFL Umpires Association as an Administration officer and states it was the turning point of her life.

“I was so lucky I came across this opportunity, I can’t begin to explain how grateful I am to AFL SportsReady and the AFL Umpires Association because this was everything I had hoped for, a job in sport!”

Coming out of school and diving head first in the workforce was a little daunting for Julia, but after the first few weeks she fit right in and was made to feel just as part of the team as someone who had been there for years.

“It was scary at first but the traineeship takes you on this incredible journey and you not only get to be a part of an amazing team you get to do practical jobs and learn about the things you love.”

When her traineeship ended, the AFL Umpires Association were more than happy to keep on Julia as a full time employee. As part of her traineeship Julia also completed a Certificate III in Business.

“I am currently in my 5th year with the AFL Umpires Association and I am absolutely loving it! I help look after the welfare of the retired VFL/AFL umpires, including the current AFL umpires.”

Aside from working, Julia dedicates herself to the North Melbourne Football Club. Where she attends every Melbourne game as a member of the cheer squad. Being passionate about football to the level she is, this traineeship has been a special and life changing opportunity that has helped her in reaching her ultimate career goal.

“It’s one thing to get a job, but it’s a whole different other story to get a job in something you love.”

“My life revolves around footy and therefore it’s always been my dream to work within the industry so when I was met with the opportunity from AFL SportsReady I can tell you now from that moment my life changed.”

“It’s not often you hear a 22 year old say they are living their dream, but thanks to AFL SportsReady I can say that I am now one of those 22 year olds.”
