Growing Skills, Growing Confidence
For Ben Bale, a Game Development Trainee at AFL Queensland in Brisbane’s West, a career in sport wasn’t something he had ever considered. But since starting his traineeship, he’s grown in confidence, developed new skills and discovered a passion for helping others do the same.
When we caught up with Ben, he’d just wrapped up a busy school holiday program, even stepping into the Brisbane Lions mascot suit to bring some extra fun for the kids!

He didn’t even know there were opportunities to work in the AFL. Until his high school sports teacher introduced him to AFL SportsReady.
I didn’t even know there were opportunities to work in the AFL. My sport teacher spoke to me about AFL SportsReady during high school in September and that’s how I found out about the traineeship.
With strong support from his teachers, including the principal at his high school.
Ben successfully secured the role and began his full-time traineeship straight after finishing Year 12, starting a Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation. Now in his second year, he’s rolled over into a Certificate IV in the same field and continues to build on his skills and experience.
Reflecting on his journey so far, Ben has been surprised by just how hands-on his role has been.
What has surprised me the most about my traineeship is that every day is different.
I thought the role was going to include a lot of admin, but I’m actually out in the field just as much as I’m in the office.
I’ve gained a lot of skills from both environments and that’s something I really value.

As a Game Development Trainee, Ben is involved in a range of activities that help grow the game at the grassroots level. His responsibilities include delivering AFL programs such as Auskick and school clinics, supporting game days and community events. As well as engaging with schools, local clubs and assisting with planning and administration tasks.
He also helps with coaching, mentoring young players and building connections within the AFL community.
One of the most pivotal moments of his traineeship has been working with kids.
Initially, Ben wasn’t sure how he would go in that aspect of the role, but he quickly found his stride.
I was pretty unsure about working with kids at first, but I’ve actually done better than I thought.
I’ve received great feedback, which has really boosted my confidence.

The welcoming environment at AFL Queensland has also played a big role in his growth.
Everyone here is very welcoming and it’s easy to ask questions. A key support during my traineeship has been the other Trainees here at AFLQ. We all talk and support each other, which makes a big difference!
Looking ahead, Ben’s traineeships are shaping his career aspirations. Before this opportunity, he was considering an apprenticeship after school. But his experience in the AFL industry has shifted his perspective.
During school, I wouldn’t have considered a career in sport, but now that I’ve experienced what it’s like to work in the industry, I’m very keen to pursue it!

For those considering a traineeship in the AFL, Ben’s advice is simple:
Be ready to learn and give it a go.
You never know where it might take you.
