AFL SportsReady trainee shines in the finance sector
6 years ago Jade Matterson never imagined she could become an Assistant Manager at one of Australia’s largest financial institutions, the ANZ.
‘It’s hard to imagine all this started from a phone call to AFL SportsReady. I can’t believe where I am today,’ she said. Jade walked into her traineeship with zero experience, but quickly impressed management and colleagues.
‘My dream was to build a solid career in something I enjoyed. When I saw the opportunity at ANZ I felt like it was right, this was my chance to get my foot in the door of a leading organisation and flourish,’ she said.
Jade started with little knowledge of the finance sector, however her commitment and enthusiasm to learn saw her fast-track the 12 month program, completing her traineeship in just 9 months. Jade’s dedication then earned her a full-time position at the Pitt Street Mall Branch. Now, the sky’s the limit.
‘If I didn’t do the traineeship and put in the hard work, I can definitely say I would not be in this amazing position. I sincerely thank AFL SportsReady for taking me on as a trainee because if it wasn’t for them my career aspirations would still be just a dream,’ she said.
AFL SportsReady worked closely with ANZ in a bid to support Jade throughout her journey, providing a dedicated Indigenous mentor and educator to ensure a high level of cultural understanding in her workplace. ‘They checked-in regularly with me and ensured I always felt supported,’ she explained.
Jade completed a Certificate III in Finance, as part of her traineeship. She credits the AFL SportsReady program and support for helping her reach her potential.
‘It was the starting point of my now successful career because it taught me everything I had to know.’
WHAT ARE TRAINEESHIPS?
