AFL SportsReady perfect fit for GWS young gun
Former trainee and AFL W player Maddy Collier describes her traineeship as an ‘extremely positive experience’ and has thanked her Field Officer Breanna Appel for supporting her through her busy year of football and work.
‘I completed my traineeship with AFL NSW/ACT Sydney in 2015 and am still employed at the AFL now as a casual employer. I’m also working as a receptionist for GWS Giants,’ said Maddy.
‘The traineeship shaped me for a career in the sporting industry. It was the perfect fit for me,’ she added.
Originally from Nowra, a small town in the South Coast Region of New South Wales, Maddy, 21, moved to Sydney to fulfill her traineeship and find
work. The transition was challenging however with the help of AFL SportsReady and her Field Officer, Breanna Appel, she was able to adapt to the changes.
‘I always felt comfortable talking to Bree, she helped me to unwind and supported me through my transition which was stressful for me,’ explained Maddy.
‘I think Field Officers are essential when doing a traineeship, they offer really good advice in times when you are feeling lost and overwhelmed. They can also help with time management skills which I found came in handy, as well.’
Maddy was drafted to the GWS Giants at the end of 2016 and made history as the NSW/ACT first priority pick in the women’s league.
‘Getting drafted was incredible. It felt like all my hard work had paid off. I still have a long way to go, but I’m always keen to keep improving.’
