Making the Most of it!

Making the Most of it!

Daniel Bevan’s traineeship at Queensland Cricket was more than just a stepping stone—it was about making the most of it and turning his passion for the sport into a rewarding career.

Since completing his traineeship in July, Daniel has seamlessly transitioned into a full-time position in the Premier Cricket and Umpiring team. He works across multiple areas, including administration, recruitment and content creation.

Reflecting on his time, Daniel credits his traineeship for equipping him with the skills and confidence needed to excel.

When I first started, it took me a while to find my feet. But once I got into a routine and had a go at trying things a few times, I started to get it. I learnt a lot in the beginning.

A crucial part of his current role involves managing PlayHQ, the online platform used for game scheduling and tracking scores. This responsibility, which he took over from his traineeship, has allowed him to deepen his expertise in cricket administration. Additionally, Daniel has expanded his responsibilities to include umpire recruitment. When we caught up with him, he was already scouting talent for the upcoming season.

Daniel has also played a key role in strengthening Queensland Cricket’s social media presence, with their Instagram and Facebook pages performing exceptionally well.

We’ve been able to create content that appeals to cricket fans who love stats, but also to the general public. It’s been really cool to see how we can engage with different audiences.

One of the highlights of Daniel’s career so far has been working on the T20 Max competition

—a high-profile tournament featuring interstate players and broadcasted on Kayo.

I used to tune in and watch it before I started my traineeship. But now, being part of it, that has definitely been the most exciting experience.

His passion for working in sports dates back to his time at AFL Queensland, where he had a casual role visiting schools.

After starting my traineeship at Queensland Cricket, I knew exactly what role I wanted to be in.

The traineeship gave me the opportunity to get my foot in the door and figure out what I loved doing.

I was really lucky—I got to try a few different roles in my first five months.

A key lesson from his journey has been the importance of team support and strong relationships. From his second day on the job, he was immediately involved in key stakeholder meetings, an experience that could have been overwhelming if not for the encouragement of his team.

My team and supervisor were always supportive. They made me feel comfortable asking questions and trying things out. I always gave things a go and tried to figure it out on my own, but I knew I could ask for help if I needed it.

Daniel’s advice to anyone considering pursuing a career in professional sport, make the most of opportunities and build connections.

Sport is a difficult industry to get into. I knew that if I could just get an opportunity and a way in, I’d make the most of it. Now I have experience, which is the hardest part to get.

The cricket season was in full swing when we met with Daniel at Cricket QLD HQ. He is thriving in his role, proving that dedication, adaptability and the right opportunities can lead to a fulfilling career that blends all his passions in sport.
