It’s not What you Know

So You’re Starting Out?
Here’s Why Networking Isn’t as Scary as It Sounds. Stepping into the big, sometimes confusing world of work can feel like trying to find your way through a maze blindfolded, with Google Maps on low battery. Whether you’re just finishing school, midway through uni or have decided it’s time to get serious about a career path, one of the trickiest parts can be getting your foot in the door.
Here’s a little secret: sometimes, it’s not just what you know, but who you know.

And before you roll your eyes, no, that doesn’t mean you need to be the loudest person in the room or hand out one million business cards at an event. Building connections (aka networking) can be much simpler and more natural than you think.
Networking can happen anywhere
Introducing yourself to someone doesn’t need to be a big corporate moment. You can meet someone who changes the course of your career at a birthday party, at a family BBQ or even in line at a coffee shop. Be open to conversations. Say G’day. Ask questions. You just never know where a casual chat might lead.
That cousin’s partner at the wedding? They might work in the industry you’re trying to break into. Your mate’s older sister at the pub? She might be looking for someone just like you to join her team.
For the introverts (we see you)
If you’re the type who would happily work from your couch with your dog as your only coworker, we get it. The thought of “networking” might sound painful. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to be outgoing to build great professional relationships. Start small. Have a chat with someone in your class, ask your supervisor a question, send a friendly message on LinkedIn. The goal isn’t to be everywhere, it’s to be genuine and curious.
The ultimate networking launchpad
Doing a traineeship isn’t just about learning on the job. It’s also a golden opportunity to start building your contacts list. The people you meet during your traineeship, such as co-workers, supervisors, customers, and external stakeholders, can become future references, mentors or employers. These relationships can lead to your next role or open doors you didn’t even know existed.
So, whether you’re the life of the party or someone who prefers one-on-one convos, remember this: you don’t have to pretend to be someone you’re not to start growing your network. Just show up, be curious and stay open to the people around you.
Because in this big, bad world of work, knowing people can make all the difference!
