Charleigh’s Outdoor Apprenticeship
For Charleigh Thompson, a three-year Parks and Gardens apprenticeship at Salesian College Sunbury has been more than just a job. It’s been a chance to put down roots, grow her skills and thrive in a hands-on environment.

I always knew that a customer-facing role wasn’t for me – Charleigh admits.
I didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk all day. I wanted a job where I could be active and working outside.
Charleigh’s journey began during her VCE Vocational Major (VM), where she completed work experience with her dad in a more hands-on role. That experience cemented her decision to pursue a career in horticulture.
After getting that firsthand experience, I knew this was the path I wanted to go down.

Finding the right apprenticeship came at just the right time.
After I finished high school, my mum told me it was a good idea to find a job. That’s how I found this apprenticeship and it turned out to be a really great opportunity.
One of the aspects Charleigh enjoys most about her role is the balance between structure and spontaneity. Each week follows a seasonal plan, outlining key tasks. Mondays start with a full school blow-down, Tuesdays are spent at TAFE, Wednesdays are usually dedicated to weeding and Thursdays and Fridays begin with a team meeting to plan the days ahead.
There’s enough routine in our team to keep us in check, but also enough spontaneity to keep things interesting and us happy.
The variety in the job keeps me engaged and excited to come to work.

Despite the physical challenges of the job, Charleigh has found ways to adapt.
The physical side of the role has definitely been challenging, but I’ve always found a way around it—even if it means asking for help.
One of her apprenticeship’s highlights is her strong sense of teamwork.
We are a tight unit here and approach every task as a team. Everyone is really supportive and just wants you to do well.

For those considering an apprenticeship or traineeship, Charleigh has one key piece of advice:
Stop thinking about it and just do it. Just apply for it. It’s such a great opportunity to get hands-on experience and build a career in something you love.
Charleigh’s journey proves that sometimes, the best opportunities aren’t typical and you’ve got to roll up your sleeves and have a go!
