Benefits of Having a Trainee for Host Supervisors

A traineeship can be a great opportunity for both the Trainee and the host supervisor. Not only does it provide the Trainee with a job along with valuable work experience, but it can also benefit the host supervisor and their workplace. In this article, we will focus on the benefits of having a Trainee for host supervisors.

John, the Cricket Operations Manager for Queensland Cricket, shares his experience of having a Trainee. According to John, having a Trainee has been massive for his team, especially during the project they were going through. He says that if they didn’t have the Trainee, the person in charge of the transition project would have struggled. Additionally, the Trainee helped out with some on-ground stuff during the busy summer season.

Having an extra person really helped and the Trainee was a good member of the team too.

John prefers having a Trainee because it allows them to build a job and service the area in need without having to keep one eye on it all the time. As long as they provide support and guidance for the Trainee, the work is getting done. This is a better outcome for both the team and the Trainee because they can experience a lot more with their time, and it’s just a bit more consistent.

Having a Trainee can also provide an opportunity for personal and professional growth. John notes that it was quite refreshing that the Trainee had a really good attitude and was happy to have a crack. If he had any issues, he could come and ask. This attitude and openness can lead to the Trainee learning more and gaining more confidence in their work.

As the Cricket Operations Manager for Queensland Cricket, John oversees community cricket, diversity and inclusion, marketing, and system data management. He took on a Trainee, Liam, through the Sports Ready program, and it has been a game-changer for his team.

John has been a big supporter of the Sports Ready program. He has seen the program produce successful graduates in the past, including some of his current area managers and staff members. When a gap in their team needed to be filled, John knew that a Trainee would be the perfect fit.

“Liam has been massive for us, especially due to the project we were going through. If we didn’t have him and the work he was doing, the person in charge of the transition project would have struggled. Additionally, Liam has helped out with some on-ground stuff during the summer season when everyone is busy running their programs. Having the extra person really helped, and Liam has been a good member of the team too,” says John.

Liam’s positive attitude and willingness to learn have impressed John.

“It was quite refreshing that Liam had a really good attitude, and he knew he wanted to work in sports, and that comes with taking some time out of hours. It’s great that we can just give him a framework and a bit of direction, and he was just quite happy to have a crack. If he had any issues, he could come and ask.”

The Sports Ready program has been an excellent resource for Liam’s development, providing him with general support and assistance with the certification. AFL Sports Ready has been there for him, both personally and professionally, and they are really friendly and helpful with any assessment questions that he has.

For John, having a Trainee has not only been beneficial for his team’s productivity, but it has also been a rewarding experience personally and professionally. He is proud to be a part of Liam’s journey and to watch him grow into his role.

“As a manager, it’s great to see someone come in and learn on the job, get experience, and get an idea of what they like and doesn’t like. It’s a great feeling to be able to give someone that opportunity,” says John.

Overall, John highly recommends the Sports Ready program to any young person looking to start a career in sports. With a supportive host employer like Queensland Cricket and a positive attitude like Liam’s, the program can be a valuable stepping stone towards a successful career in the sports industry.
