Ambition to Return, as a PE Teacher

Ambition to Return, as a PE Teacher

For Lauren Shaw, sport has always been more than just a hobby; it’s an ambition that will shape her career beyond the classroom. As she neared the end of her Sport/PE Assistant Traineeship at Salesian College in Sunbury, Lauren reflected on the rewarding opportunity that had brought her back to school and the exciting future that lay ahead.

Lauren first heard about the traineeship through a close friend who had previously completed it. Already heavily involved in the College’s sports department during her senior years, Lauren had seen firsthand the impact of past Trainees and knew it was an opportunity worth exploring.

I had known about the traineeship for a while because I was really active in sport at school. I got to know the previous Trainees well and could see how much they got out of it. It looked like a great stepping stone.

When Year 12 ended, Lauren wasn’t entirely sure what her next steps would be. With interests in both education and physiotherapy, she saw the traineeship as a perfect blend of both worlds, offering a chance to snap up a gap year while gaining hands-on experience and determining where her passion truly lies.

Taking the traineeship gave me the time and space to really think about what I wanted.

Now I’m certain, I want to become a PE teacher.

Outside of school, Lauren continues to live and breathe sport, playing and coaching football in her local community. This deep connection to sport made the traineeship feel like a natural fit, allowing her to contribute meaningfully to the College’s sporting culture.

No two days are the same in Lauren’s role. Whether she’s supporting students in PE classes, assisting with carnivals or helping coordinate interschool competitions, she’s constantly learning and growing within her role. A highlight of the year has been completing a Certificate IV in Sport Development, which has equipped her with valuable skills and knowledge for the future.

One of the biggest lessons, Lauren says, has been learning how to communicate professionally with both students and staff.

I’ve grown a lot in terms of confidence and professionalism. Working with a range of people every day has really helped me develop those skills.

As the end of her traineeship was approaching, Lauren was preparing to start university with plans to study education. She also hopes to continue working within the sports industry while she studies, staying connected to the community that has helped her thrive.

The traineeship confirmed that this is the path I want to take. I’m really grateful for the experience and excited for what’s next.

Lauren Shaw’s story highlights the value of practical, hands-on opportunities, such as the Sport and PE Traineeship. Where passion, purpose and personal growth all come together.
