AFL stars champion benefits of VET
A representative from each AFL club will champion the benefits of vocational education and training (VET) during the 2018 premiership season, as part of a partnership between AFL SportsReady and the Australian Government.
Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills Karen Andrews visited AFL SportsReady headquarters for the launch of the first of a series of videos to coincide with 18 games during the season.
“Today we mark the eagerly anticipated start of the AFL season, and tonight’s clash between Richmond and Carlton with the release of a video featuring Richmond premiership player Kane Lambert,” Minister Andrews said.
“Kane is setting himself up for a career beyond the playing field by completing a Certificate IV in Business and a Diploma of Sport Development.“His success has already motivated teammates to take on a VET qualification and I’m confident that through sharing his experience more broadly, other young Australians will see the many benefits that VET has to offer.”
The videos will be readily available through social media and the AFL SportsReady website.
“Footy fans from all over Australia will be inspired by their AFL hero’s personal success stories which exemplify the diverse range of opportunities available through VET,” Minister Andrews said.
Minister Andrews said AFL SportsReady was an ideal partner in the Government’s real skills for real careers strategy, which dispels outdated perceptions about VET and demonstrates how it leads to successful, meaningful, professional careers with great salaries and outstanding career prospects.
“AFL SportsReady reaches out to young people on a daily basis through sport, business and the arts, to provide an entry-level training and support program that combines practical work experience with vocational education,” Minister Andrews said.
“Its work has helped thousands of young Australians kick-start their careers while supporting employers to build skilled and qualified workforces.”
