Hard Work Pays Off for Tassie Trainees

AFL SportsReady has praised two outstanding Tasmanian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees after they were honoured as finalists at the 2016 Tasmanian Training Awards, in the School-based Apprentice of the Year category.

Eighteen-year-old Corey Burgess and Brooke Faltusz- Cashion stood out from the pack after a rigorous interview process for the awards, which recognise young apprentices and trainees in their industry.

‘It was an incredible feeling of excitement mixed with nerves when I found out I was a finalist,’ said Corey, who is completing a school-based traineeship at East Derwent Primary School (Jordan River Learning Federation).

‘I put in a lot of effort and hard work and always try to do my best in my traineeship, that’s why I think I have come this far,’ he added.

Throughout the year both trainees have showed initiative, dedication and growth in their respective roles despite also juggling high school studies.

‘I must thank my Field Officer Tracey Parry. She is a massive help to me and also the staff from Jordan River Learning Federation for giving myself and Brooke the opportunity to work at a primary school,’ smiled Corey.

The staff at Jordan River Learning Foundation, are thrilled with the achievement.

‘The support and care provided by AFL SportsReady is integral to our students’ success and wellbeing, we look forward continuing to work with AFL SportsReady and to seeing Corey and Brooke’s futures unfolding,’ said Principal Sandy Menaude.

Corey and Brooke will complete their traineeships at the end October and will no doubt continue to achieve in the industry.
