On the Road with the Eagles
Every week brings something different for Jake Paterson, whose traineeship has taken him across Western Australia, delivering football programs to schools and communities while representing the club he has supported his whole life.
From Kalgoorlie and Albany to the Western Desert and communities throughout the South West, Jake’s traineeship with AFL SportsReady and the West Coast Eagles has opened the door to places and experiences he may never have encountered otherwise.
As a Participation Officer Trainee for the West Coast Eagles Football Club, Jake organises and delivers school and community football programs, works with a range of age groups and helps grow participation across the region.
“One of the biggest highlights has been all the travel and getting to see so much of WA through the job.”
Working across such a diverse region means no two weeks look the same. It has also given Jake the chance to connect with people across generations and communities.
“We work with everyone from toddlers to over 55s, so you get to meet a lot of different people. It’s great seeing people enjoy the programs and knowing you’ve helped create a positive experience for them.”
Having supported the West Coast Eagles his whole life, the opportunity to represent the club in the community has made the experience even more meaningful.
The experience has also pushed Jake beyond his comfort zone, helping him build skills and confidence that will stay with him long after his traineeship finishes.
“My communication skills have probably improved the most. Growing up in a small country town, I was used to knowing most people, so this job has been quite different.
“I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with lots of different people through schools, community programs and events across WA, which has helped me become more comfortable communicating with a wide range of people.”
The pace and variety of the role have also strengthened Jake’s organisation and time management skills. With programs to plan and deliver across a huge region, he has learned to work independently, manage his time and adapt quickly.
“The traineeship has helped me grow by giving me real-world experience and a lot more responsibility.
“I’ve learnt how to work independently, manage my own schedule and adapt to different situations each day.”
For Jake, this real-world experience is one of the biggest advantages of undertaking a traineeship.
“I’d definitely recommend a traineeship. The online coursework makes it really flexible and you’re able to earn a qualification while getting hands-on experience in a real job.
“I’ve learnt a lot more from actually being in the workplace, and it’s given me opportunities I probably wouldn’t have had otherwise.”
While he is still working out exactly where his career will take him, Jake knows he wants sport to remain part of the picture.
“I’d like to stay involved in sport if I can. For now I’m just focused on making the most of the experience and seeing where it leads.”
For now, that means making the most of every opportunity, from delivering football programs in communities across WA to meeting new people and proudly representing the Eagles along the way.
