Personal Growth for the Win!

Layla Boseley, a proud member of the Arrernte mob, worked as the Events Communications Trainee at the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative, and her experience has been a journey of personal growth. After finishing high school, Layla was uncertain about her career path.
However, her traineeship experience has allowed her to discover her passion and potential. Layla has grown both personally and professionally, and her hard work and dedication were recognised recently winning AFL SportsReady’s 2023 First Nations Trainee of the Year Award for Victoria.

In this interview, Layla shares her experience and the impact of the support networks provided to her during her traineeship.

According to Layla, her traineeship experience was amazing, and she couldn’t have asked for a better one. The program allowed her to study and gain work experience, and each day was different. Layla’s traineeship journey helped her build her confidence and pride in her abilities, which was crucial to her personal growth.

Layla was awarded the 2023 First Nations Trainee of the Year award in Victoria, which came as a shock.

She reflects that she wasn’t expecting anything at the end of the traineeship and was overwhelmed when she stood on the stage receiving the award. Layla acknowledges that her success is due to the support of her mentors, field officer, supervisor, and educator. She feels that they should have been there with her on the stage as she wouldn’t have completed without them.

Layla recommends completing a traineeship for anyone who is unsure of their career path or looking for an opportunity to upskill and gain work experience.

The traineeship program has many benefits, including the opportunity to study and work, gain experience, and build connections. Layla is an example of how a traineeship can change a young person’s life and set them on a path towards a successful and fulfilling career.

Layla’s traineeship experience has been transformative, both personally and professionally. She has grown in confidence, discovered her passion, and found direction and purpose in her career. The support networks provided to her during her traineeship were instrumental in her success, and she strongly recommends completing a traineeship to anyone looking to upskill and gain work experience.

Layla gained full-time work with her host employer, the Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative at the end of her traineeship.
We wish her all the best in her new role and future endeavours.
