Transformative Power of Mentorship

Transformative Power of Mentorship

Through the transformative power of mentorship, individuals like John Hollows, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mentor for AFL SportsReady provide cultural and career pathway support for First Nation trainees.

As a Mentor, John plays a crucial role in guiding and supporting Trainees through pathways such as BSB administration, sports science, or community development.
A week in the life of a Mentor involves immersing himself in the vibrant world of community events and engaging with community leaders and First Nations-run companies.

“It’s like a non-stop party with a purpose.”

He acts as a matchmaker, visiting potential host employers to find the perfect match for trainees’ dream careers.

“Swipe right for a workplace that aligns with our trainees’ aspirations and goals!”

Most importantly, John maintains deep connections with his trainees. He is always striving to be their trusted friend and offer support with workplace and personal challenges.

He plays the role of a quirky sidekick, providing a listening ear and guidance throughout their journey.

“We’re talking about deep connections here, where they feel comfortable enough to vent, share their victories…”

Having a Mentor to support First Nations people in a traineeship is essential. Mentors provide crucial guidance, cultural understanding, role modelling, networking opportunities, personal development, emotional support and community connections. This comprehensive support for trainees helps them navigate challenges and significantly enhances their chances of success in their chosen field.

Mentorship plays a vital role in empowering First Nations individuals, enabling them to overcome obstacles and embrace their potential.

This is very simple. I follow my 4B’s –
BE REAL
BE CARING
BE GENUINE
BE UNDERSTANDING

John follows his 4B’s: being real, caring, genuine, and understanding. These qualities guide his approach as a Mentor, enabling him to build trust, provide support and make a positive impact on young people.

My journey is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and the resilience of the human spirit. Serving as a reminder that with the right guidance and support, we can overcome even the most challenging circumstances. Let us join together in creating a ripple effect of empowerment. Offering every individual the opportunity to thrive and make positive contributions to our communities.

Mentorship holds immense importance for First Nations people in traineeships. As John, aptly put it, Mentors play a vital role in guiding as he supports trainees across 2 states:

“Today, I proudly serve as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mentor for AFL Sportsready, guiding and supporting trainees across NSW, QLD, and ACT.”

The aim is to uplift those who may doubt their capabilities, those who have faced challenges, and those who deserve a second chance. Mentors instil hope, self-belief and confidence in young individuals. Empowering them to rise above their circumstances and wholeheartedly embrace their full potential.

With Mentors like John, dedicated to making a positive impact, the transformative power of mentorship continues to uplift First Nations trainees and enrich their lives for the better.
