From Rising Star to Master of Leadership

As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day, we take a moment to recognise educators like Zachary Mills, who have made remarkable strides in shaping the next generation. It has been over a decade of experience since his rise through a traineeship. AFL SportsReady Alumni’s journey from a School Program Trainee to a key figure in Physical Education has been inspiring.

Zac began a two-year traineeship at Woodcroft College through the AFL SportsReady program, giving him early exposure to both teaching and administrative roles in the Sports Department. This head start in his career also allowed him to study for Certificates II & III in Sport and Recreation.

His hard work didn’t go unnoticed—

Zac was awarded the 2013 Rising Star Award!

He was recognised for his contributions to the college and was honoured to be nominated for South Australian Trainee of the Year.

His then-supervisor praised his efforts;

Zac showed outstanding commitment and dedication to his traineeship. Plus a high level of maturity and terrific organisational skills. Colleagues, parents and supervisors highly commend Zac’s communication skills, knowledge and his ability to share his expertise with others.

Reflecting on the significance of his traineeship, Zac shared:

Initially, I saw the traineeship as a way to immerse myself in sport and escape traditional classroom learning.

However, I soon realised it was a pivotal opportunity to discover my passion for teaching Physical Education and encouraging student participation.

Having attended Woodcroft College since Year 5, the traineeship was a natural extension of his connection to the school. After completing the traineeship, Zac continued working at Woodcroft in a coaching and administrative role within the Sports Department while studying for a Bachelor’s degree.

This hands-on experience not only confirmed his calling but also gave Zac an edge when he was pursuing a Bachelor of Education (Primary R-7) at Flinders University, with a double major in Health and Physical Education. While many of his peers were just starting their practical experiences. Zac had already spent two years coaching, managing sports programs and developing a strong connection with his students and community.

These formative years he laid the foundation for his current role as the Head of Junior Years Sport and Physical Education at Seymour College.
Where his leadership inspires a high number of students to participate in after-school sports.

Today, Zac balances his responsibilities at Seymour College with his role as a Coach Developer with SANFL. Looking forward, Zac is also pursuing a Master of Leadership in Education by 2026. Ensuring his career continues to evolve while positively impacting students and fellow educators.

Zac’s advice to a young person considering a traineeship:

Take a leap of faith and consider a traineeship. It can set you up for long-term success.

I wouldn’t have become a Physical Education teacher and Sports Coordinator straight out of university without the knowledge and experience I gained through my traineeship.

You’ll also have the opportunity to meet incredible people on the same journey, which can lead to lifelong connections.

Zac’s dedication to fostering young talent and promoting inclusive participation in sports hasn’t gone unnoticed.

He has been proudly nominated for the 2024 Toyota AFL Teacher of the Year Award.

An incredible recognition of his contributions to primary school football. This nomination highlights his focus on increasing female participation in the sport and his ongoing work in coach development. Zac is deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside some of the best in the AFL community, continuing to make a positive impact.

On World Teachers’ Day, we tip our hats to educators like Zac. Whose dedication goes beyond the classroom, shaping lives through mentorship and leadership. His story stands as an example of starting strong, embracing opportunities and the profound impact that a good teacher can have.
