AFL SportsReady Alumni, Pamela Anderson, a driven and detail-oriented individual, found her calling in the world of administration. With her natural organisational skills and a passion for working with people, she embarked on an Administration Traineeship. Just three days after completing her year 12 exams back in November 2015. Little did she know that this opportunity would set her on a transformative path, leading her to become the SA Team Leader at AFL SportsReady.
Joining AFL SportsReady proved to be a turning point for Pam. She quickly felt like an integral part of the team, emphasising the organisation’s inclusive and supportive work environment. Pam appreciated the unique approach of AFL SportsReady, which combined on-the-job learning with off-the-job education components. This comprehensive training method provided her with a well-rounded understanding, offering a solid foundation for success in her career.
“I knew that I couldn’t let one set back stop me from persisting within my career aspirations. As a result of this experience I took my new opportunity with AFL SportsReady with both hands and ran with it wholeheartedly.
I quickly felt like a part of the team and surprised myself with what I was capable of achieving.”
One of the most significant developments during Pam’s traineeship was the growth in her confidence. The opportunity to prove herself and achieve remarkable things with guidance and support boosted her self-belief immensely. Anderson’s traineeship experience not only equipped her with practical skills but also empowered her to overcome challenges and believe in her abilities.
“My favourite part of my traineeship was being given the opportunity to push myself and prove that I can achieve some pretty amazing things with a little guidance and support.”
Reflecting on her journey, Pam considers taking on the traineeship as one of the best choices she has made in her life. The experience provided her with invaluable knowledge and helped her find her footing in the workforce. The combination of on-the-job learning and off-the-job education, she believes, offered a unique and irreplaceable opportunity for early career development.
“In my opinion, taking on this traineeship was one of the best choices I have made in my life so far. It has given me the opportunity to gain so much experience and find my footing in the workforce.”
Passionate about supporting young individuals, Pam strongly encourages them to explore traineeships and vocational education. She advises young people to conduct thorough research and seek advice from those familiar with traineeships before dismissing them as irrelevant. Traineeships, Pam emphasises, offer a fantastic way to kick-start your career.
Providing a balance between practical experience and further education, they offer an opportunity to learn the basics, earn a wage and gain industry experience.
“Don’t follow the crowd but be yourself and make the best choice for who you are. Do what makes you happy because no matter what you end up doing you will be successful because your heart is in it.
It’s a great way to get your foot in the door at an organisation, learn the basis, and earn a wage while also gaining further education to complement what you are doing.”
Pam herself has continued her journey with AFL SportsReady for the past seven years, now serving as a Team Leader, Field Officer, and Educator for South Australia. In this role, she takes pride in creating awareness among young people about the potential traineeships hold. Pam passes on the knowledge she was fortunate enough to receive when considering her career pathway. Supporting others through their journeys and witnessing their achievements brings her immense joy.
“I am currently still working at AFL SportsReady and have been for the last 7 years. My role is now Team Leader SA, Field Officer and Educator.
This role allows me to create more awareness for young people and the opportunities that are out there through traineeships. By passing on the knowledge that I was lucky enough to receive when I was considering my future career pathway.”
Pam’s story is one of determination, growth, and empowerment. Her experience demonstrates the transformative power of traineeships, encouraging young people to embrace these opportunities and pursue their dreams. Through her role as Team Leader in South Australia, Pam continues to make a positive impact on young people. Therefore creating a brighter future for the next generation of professionals.
