What Makes a Potential Trainee Stand Out

What Makes a Potential Trainee Stand Out

As Recruitment & Engagement Officer at AFL SportsReady, Demi plays a pivotal role in helping young people start their careers. Whether she’s matching candidates with the right traineeship or building relationships with host employers, she has a front-row seat to what makes a potential trainee stand out, the traits and attitudes that open doors to opportunity.

My role primarily involves matching candidates to our traineeships. This includes screening applications and resumes, conducting interviews and having conversations with individuals interested in starting a traineeship with us.

The focus is on identifying suitable candidates and aligning them with the right opportunities. I also do business development, which involves identifying and approaching potential new businesses to host trainees.

It’s a balance between supporting job seekers and finding great host employers. Demi brings care and energy to both sides of the process and

when it comes to spotting potential, she knows exactly what makes a trainee stand out.

I look for genuine enthusiasm and motivation, paired with relevant experience in the field they’re pursuing. Most importantly, I want to see a clear sense of commitment and passion for completing a traineeship, it’s that drive and dedication that really stands out.

Helping candidates believe in themselves and their career paths is deeply passionate for Demi.

I encourage candidates to pursue work placement in their area of interest not only to gain a realistic understanding of the field, but also to confirm that it’s truly the path they want to follow. Having direct experience, significantly strengthens their application and improves their chances of securing a traineeship.

By helping candidates get hands-on experience, Demi ensures they’re confident and prepared before stepping into their new roles. She believes that success at work today comes down to two key skills that apply far beyond the world of traineeships and something Demi encourages in every candidate she meets.

The ability to take initiative and communicate effectively within the workplace is essential.

These qualities enable individuals to contribute confidently, collaborate effectively and adapt across roles and industries – not just within our traineeships.

There are plenty of rewarding moments in Demi’s job, but a few stand out.

Successfully matching a candidate to the right position is always rewarding but seeing them complete their traineeship and move on to greater opportunities is what makes it truly meaningful. Being part of that journey – from potential to progress – is incredibly fulfilling. It’s those ongoing successes that reinforce my passion for this role.

Every person I place into a traineeship brings me a genuine sense of pride.
