Opportunities for growth and learning abound in the dynamic world of arts and culture. Under the AFL SportsReady program, Thomas Griffith undertook a Traineeship at the Tuggeranong Community Arts Association (TCAA).
Supervised by Caroline Downer, Thomas’s journey shed light on the invaluable role of mentorship and Traineeships in nurturing young talent within the arts sector.
For over three decades, the Tuggeranong Community Arts Association served as a cornerstone of artistic expression in the Tuggeranong community. Offering a variety of programs including exhibitions, live performances and workshops.
The Tuggeranong Arts Centre (TAC) functioned as a vibrant hub for creative endeavours. Caroline Downer, Thomas’s supervisor at TCAA, described the organisation as;
a gathering place that celebrated the arts and fostered community engagement.
Caroline’s decision to engage in AFL SportsReady’s – ArtsReady Traineeship program stemmed from a desire to support young individuals pursuing careers in the arts.
Particular positions within an arts center lend themselves to a Trainee,
explained Caroline. Highlighting the symbiotic relationship between TCAA and Trainees like Thomas, who benefited from hands-on experience while contributing to the organisation’s success.
As a Front of House Trainee, Thomas’s responsibilities span a variety of tasks, from assisting in art classes to room set-ups as well as admin support to programs. Under Caroline’s mentorship, Thomas flourished, demonstrating significant personal and professional growth.
Our Trainee certainly grew in confidence over the year,
noted Caroline, highlighting Thomas’s adaptability and dedication.
AFL SportsReady’s comprehensive support structure played a pivotal role in Thomas’s development. Weekly online education classes and ongoing assistance ensured Thomas received the guidance needed to excel. Caroline commended the program’s effectiveness, emphasising the invaluable support provided to both Trainees and host employers.
Thomas’s presence brought tangible benefits to TCAA, enhancing operational efficiency and infusing the organisation with a fresh perspective.
Having someone dedicated to tasks like setting up rooms and handling admin has supported the entire team,
said Caroline. Having young talent in the workplace, particularly in the arts and creative industry, promoted innovative ideas and a vibrant energy that brought about creativity.
Caroline wholeheartedly recommended AFL SportsReady’s program to other organisations, citing its effectiveness in nurturing talent and fostering a culture of learning.

affirmed Caroline, underscoring the program’s value in shaping the future of the arts industry.
