AFL SportsReady has kick-started the careers of approximately 18,000 jobseekers, including over 3,000 Indigenous Australians, and supported hundreds of organisations and businesses right across Australia.  Our First Nations program, Warumilang, represents the support and opportunities created for Indigenous people through quality education and employment.

We focus on strengthening relationships, promoting respect and creating employment and education opportunities for Indigenous people.  AFL SportsReady’s works with trainees located across Australia, with our head office based in Melbourne.

 

THE ROLE

Supporting our First Nations trainees and cadets in Queensland, NSW and the ACT, the First Nations Mentor plays an important part in supporting a case load of First Nations participants, as well as our host employment partners.  The successful candidate will provide mentoring, cultural and employment related support for young people, and engage with local community on behalf of AFL SportsReady.

You will be versatile and adaptable, and willing to support other National organisational activities as required.

The role will involve regular travel throughout Queensland and infrequent travel to NSW / ACT, with some over-night trips to more regional areas.

A week in the life of the First Nations Mentor could involve visiting trainees at their workplaces, engaging with host employers to check in on progress, completing necessary administration and notes, and undertaking community engagement and promotion activities.  This is a diverse and rewarding role that would suit an organised, resilient and supportive person.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Provide mentoring support to a case load of First Nations program participants;
  • Provide support to, and engage with, our network of host employers – maintaining positive and effective working relationships;
  • Provide cultural guidance to support participants to navigate the workforce and building strong network communities;
  • Lead and support community engagement and program activities to promote AFL SportsReady’s programs and services; and
  • Complete relevant program administration on time, and to a high standard.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

The following are essential requirements of the role:

  • First Nations Identified candidate;
  • Relevant qualifications and / or sector experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in working with First Nations young people, preferably in a mentoring capacity;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues facing First Nations communities and young people;
  • Highly collaborative style and excellent communicator;
  • Willingness to undertake regular state-based and interstate regional travel;
  • Proactive and positive approach to issue management;
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to work autonomously and with sound judgement;
  • Demonstrated ability to follow systems and processes to maintain accurate records;
  • Current Blue Card;
  • Willingness to obtain NSW / ACT Working with Children Clearance; and
  • Current and unrestricted Driver’s Licence.

Relevant experience, e.g. case management, client management, training, employment services, is desirable but not mandatory.
