Evans Rides Career Wave

Cormach Evans, 22, has recently completed his 12 month Surfing Victoria appointed AFL Sports Ready Indigenous Traineeship with Strapper Surfboards. The indigenous trainee program is a key element of Surfing Victoria’s VicHealth Indigenous engagement project and is supported by Play It Safe By The Water.

Evans, a keen surfer, met Surfing Victoria’s Indigenous Aquatics Manager Steve Parker at the annual Victorian Indigenous Titles. Steve instantly identified Evans as having great potential to be an excellent role model within the Indigenous community. “Through opportunities provided by Surfing Victoria Indigenous Programs, we were able to put Cormach through his Level 1 Surfing Coaching Course”.

“It was there we could see that he was really comfortable communicating with others and that he has a great positive attitude.” “When I was organising the AFL Sports Ready Traineeships, I knew Cormach would be perfect for a customer service position and he hasn’t let us down”. Parker Said. 

Prior to the Strapper Surfboards Traineeship, Evans was working part time in a Pizza shop in Geelong. “To me working at the Pizza shop was just a job. Now I have a career”. “As soon as I walked into the Strapper store I was welcomed by all of the staff, Mike Di Sciascio feels more like a mate than a boss”. “I have now moved to Torquay and have a job in an industry I am passionate about, I couldn’t be happier”.

Evans has been appointed a full time role in the Torquay Strapper Surfboards store since completing his traineeship.

As part of it’s extensive Indigenous Programs, Surfing Victoria this year has also placed AFL Sports Ready Indigenous Trainees at Swimming Victoria and at the YMCA Anglesea Recreation Camp.
