How the Indigenous Cadetship Program works
An Indigenous Cadetship brings together a host employer, NIAA and AFL SportsReady to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students to gain paid, practical experience while completing their degree.
- AFL SportsReady connects candidates with available cadetship opportunities and works with host employers to find the right match. We also provide ongoing mentoring, support and guidance throughout your cadetship.
- NIAA (The National Indigenous Australians Agency) provides funding to support eligible Indigenous cadetships and help employers create these opportunities.
- The host employer provides the paid cadetship position and practical experience in the candidate’s chosen field. Cadets work alongside the team, build their skills and gain an understanding of the industry while they study.

Through his cadetship with Queensland Health, he gained hands-on experience while completing his business degree. "You should never say no to a great opportunity because you never know where it will take you."
