Gold Coast SUNS Home Turf Apprentice

Gold Coast SUNS Home Turf Apprentice

For Jonathan Marett, working as a Horticulture and Logistics Apprentice with the Gold Coast SUNS at Carrara Stadium is more than just a job – it’s a dream come true. As a sports fan with a passion for footy and cricket. Jon found the perfect opportunity to combine his interests with a hands-on career in turf management.

I had worked here before at the stadium and when I saw the role advertised, I jumped on it!
I already knew the team was great here and that made me want to take the opportunity.

Jon is currently studying a Certificate III in Sports Turf Management and he’s quick to point out that the education component is a key part of the apprenticeship’s appeal.

The support here is incredible – everything I learn, I can put straight into practice, which makes a big difference. The whole team – from events to venues and horticulture – operates at an elite level and the club culture is all about being competitive and the best, which is really motivating.

Working at Carrara Stadium means every day brings something new.

This place is multi-use, it’s not just about footy and cricket. From a horticultural perspective, the work is so varied. One day you’re preparing for a game and the next you’re planning around training schedules and events.

Managing tight timelines and multiple stakeholders has been one of the challenges he’s embraced.

It’s not as straightforward as it looks. There’s a lot to juggle, but the people here are really on top of their work and I’ve learned a lot from them.

While the job can involve long hours, especially on game days, Jon says the passion he has for the work makes it easy.

If you enjoy the sport, it’s not a struggle.

You do everything you can to make sure the ground is perfect and gets that tick of approval from the AFL.

Despite the intensity, he’s found the work-life balance to be good.

I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed coming to work every day. I haven’t had a bad day here.

The environment and the people make all the difference.

For anyone considering a similar path, Jon’s advice is simple:

Make sure it’s something you’re passionate about and enjoy showing up for every day – it makes life so much easier.

His love of sport shines through in his work and he appreciates being able to contribute without needing to be an athlete.

I’ve always been a spectator and followed the Suns, so being involved at this level is incredible.

As Jon reflects on his journey so far, he’s grateful for the opportunities the apprenticeship has given him.

I’ve been able to experience things I never thought were possible.

I’m really thankful for the support of my team – they’ve made a huge impact on my development.

For Jon, working at Carrara Stadium with the Gold Coast SUNS isn’t just a job.
It’s the perfect way to grow a career in a field he loves.
