Sports Management and Leadership Program
The Sports Management and Leadership Program is a partnership program between AFL SportsReady and AFL Victoria. This 18-month course aims to provide participants with the qualifications, experience and industry networks to develop a full-time career within the sports industry.
Designed using an experiential learning framework, the Sports Management and Leadership Program allows participants to learn and apply classroom theory in a live work environment. The Sports Management and Leadership Program provides a direct entry pathway to La Trobe University, with up to (1) years credit into a range of Bachelor Degree programs. This ensures participants who decide to study further have a clear pathway into University.
DURATION
The program will run for 18 months in total starting in February 2014 and completing in July 2015 with holidays in December/January.
QUALIFICATIONS
Upon successful completion of the Sports Management and Leadership Program, students will receive the following:
- Certificate IV in Business (BSB40212)
- Diploma of Sport Development (SIS50610)
- Responsible Serving of Alcohol*
- Senior First Aid*
- Working with Children Check

INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE
As part of the program, students will undertake the equivalent of 2 days a week, managerial work placement (unpaid) at one of AFL Victoria’s affiliated leagues and clubs. There will be a maximum of 2 students per organisation and students stay with the same organisation for the duration of the program (18 months); this will enable students to gain real experience in a high level sporting environment. Students will receive exposure to a range of managerial level experiences and potential, ongoing career opportunities.
PATHWAYS
Upon successful completion of the program (with no more than 3 failed subjects) students have guaranteed direct entry with up to one (1) years credit to the following La Trobe University degrees:
- Bachelor of Business – Melbourne, Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton
- Bachelor of Business (Sport Management) – Melbourne
- Bachelor of Business (Sport Development and Management) – Bendigo
- Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) – Melbourne
- Bachelor of Business (Leadership and Management) – Melbourne
- Bachelor of Business (Marketing) – Melbourne
ATTENDANCE
Participants will attend 2 full day workshops per week and the equivalent of 2 days a week unpaid work placement.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must have successfully completed Year 12 or be a mature age applicant. A mature age student is any student that is not
a current school leaver. Maximum 40 places available, selected by application.

COST
- Tuition Fee for Full Fee Paying Students $4,990
- Tuition Fee for Eligible VTG Students $3,600
- Tuition Fee for Eligible Concession Students $2,160
A materials fee of $300 will cover all resources including a polo shirt and backpack.
To eligible students, this training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding.
LEADERSHIP SEMINARS
Students receive entry to four (4) exclusive Leadership Presentations, delivered by high profile sports personalities such as Olympic Hurdler, Kyle Vander-Kuyp.
