Indigenous Career Opportunities

More than 100 young Indigenous Australians will have access to quality finance industry job opportunities thanks to a partnership between Australia’s leading banking institutions and national employment and education provider AFL SportsReady.

AFL SportsReady’s exciting partnership with the NAB, CBA and ANZ is part of our team’s commitment to ensuring young Indigenous trainees can kick-start their careers through quality education and job opportunities.

Thanks to the partnership, AFL SportsReady is embarking on a nationwide recruitment drive to fill a raft of school-based traineeship opportunities for Indigenous students in Years 10, 11 or 12, who are looking to pursue a career in the customer service or finance industries.

Jade Colgan, Manager of AFL SportsReady’s Indigenous Employment Program said, “This initiative is a great example of how strong partnerships between AFL SportsReady and Australia’s leading banks can deliver positive outcomes for young Indigenous Australians, by creating meaningful employment opportunities.”

As part of the AFL SportsReady team, the successful candidates can:

  • Earn while they learn, working one day a week at their local bank branch;
  • Obtain on the job training and essential work experience;
  • Complete a nationally recognised qualification (Certificate II in Business);
  • Receive ongoing career support through our Indigenous mentoring program;
  • Develop skills in customer service, sales and cash-handling; and
  • Complete in either 1-2 years.

Former AFL SportsReady trainee, Jennifer Sorgel, who completed a traineeship with the ANZ bank endorsed the program and offered some advice for potential trainees, “Give it a shot; you don’t know what you are capable of until you try it. You will be surprised how much you can achieve if you just have the right mindset, she said.

“I definitely feel I have grown as a person and become more mature. I didn’t know much about finance, budgeting or money but it has been a great life lesson to learn.”
