Indigenous Cadet Gets Continued Support Through The Crisis

Indigenous Northern Territory Cadet, David Paull, has commended the school he is completing his cadetship at for providing him with ongoing support and assistance through the current challenges facing the country.

There is an amazing support system here at O’Loughlin Catholic College in Darwin,” said David.

“The school provides me with a mentor to ensure I am looking after my well-being and coping with completing my studies. My school and AFL SportsReady have been absolutely amazing,” he added.

David started his cadetship at the beginning of the year. He took on the opportunity because he wanted to attend University but couldn’t afford to quit his full-time job.

“I was working as an Australian Indigenous Education Worker at a Secondary School and loved it. I love being a mentor to Indigenous young people and I enjoy helping them to achieve their academic goals.

I knew I wanted to be a teacher but to go to University meant I couldn’t earn a sufficient income and I just couldn’t afford that. But then I discovered the cadetship program, and everything changed for me.”

AFL SportsReady’s Indigenous Cadetship program allows Indigenous University students the opportunity to complete 12 weeks of paid work experience in their chosen field of study.

“The cadetship allows me to work part-time at O’Loughlin Catholic College and study Education full-time at Charles Darwin University. At the same time, I am gaining all the skills, knowledge and life experience I need to prepare me for a career in teaching.”

Despite the current situation with Coronavirus, David said he has been supported every step of the way. His employer and AFL SportsReady have provided the necessary support systems to help him through this difficult time.

“The cadetship has provided me with financial support, with emotional support as well as support with my studies and preparing for my career ambitions. It has given me a sense of belief that if I want to become a teacher, I can and will become a teacher.

In a time of uncertainty, it’s good to know that this support system remains. In fact, it is stronger than ever.”
