Get a Head Start With a School-Based Traineeship

AFL SportsReady has over 20 exciting Indigenous school-based traineeships at ANZ across the country.

The traineeships are offered to current year 10 students and give young people the opportunity to get a head start in their careers. While completing their high school studies, trainees typically work one day a week in a bank to gain experience, study a nationally accredited qualification and earn an income.

“It’s a great way to prepare a young person for the workforce. If they are interested in the finance industry it is even better because while they are still in school, they are able to build the foundations for their future. I started my career in the finance industry and it has led me to where I am today,” said AFL SportsReady’s Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander Policy and Programs Executive, Sheena Watt.

Throughout their entire traineeship journey, trainees are supported by a Field Officer, Educator and an Indigenous Mentor. Their Field Officer provides them support through their work and the Educator helps with the course work while their Mentor gives them valuable life guidance and mentorship.

Proud Aboriginal woman and ANZ Tasmanian school-based trainee, Abby Watson, believes her AFL SportsReady Mentor was key in helping her succeed in her traineeship.

“My AFL SportsReady Indigenous Mentor, Ralph White, has been a godsend. He is amazing and has put so much effort and energy into supporting me. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by such a strong support group in my traineeship,” said Abby.

Abby is thriving in her traineeship with ANZ while completing her high school studies and balancing a casual job.

Another Tasmanian local and former ANZ school-based trainee, Tyson Eiszele, believes the traineeship helped him stay motivated to finish his high school studies.

“It’s one of the best things I have ever done. It allowed me to stay in school and have a job at the same time so I could gain the work experience I needed to set me up for the future,” said Tyson.

“It also gave me a range of new skills and confidence that helped me get ahead in all areas of life,” he added.

The traineeships are offered in VIC, SA, WA, TAS, NT, QLD and NSW and span across regional towns.
