Trainee meets the Prince

Jason & the Prince

One of AFL SportsReady’s valued Host Employers, Whitelion were invited to participate in the launch of a new vehicle for business-community partnerships, Melbourne Cares, on March 3rd 2005. The event was made all the more special by the attendance of His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, who has been President of a similar organisation in England for over 20 years. The morning consisted of round table discussions between business and community representatives and young people, focusing on issues confronting youth in Melbourne. Two of our AFL SportsReady trainees were invited to participate, Monika Prasad & Jason Waples, and each of them held their own during discussions and had the opportunity to meet the Prince. Our young leader Jason was invited to address the gathering of 150 people about his life experiences and the significant impact of his ongoing relationship with his mentor. Jason entertained and most importantly informed us all about the importance of positive people in our lives and the difference every one of us can make. Indeed HRH was highly impressed with Jason’s speech and Jason himself, resulting in a good chat one-on-one between the Prince and the country boy! Everyone at AFL SportsReady are proud that our trainees can achieve so much during their traineeships. If you have a story you would like to share with us about the achievements of our trainees and/or Host Employers please contact Lauren on 03 8663 3047 or Email:

Trainees with the Big Cats!

Whitelion was also delighted to have the opportunity in February to take 15 young people to a clinic with the Melbourne Tigers Basketball Team, thanks to Medibank Private.

Some of our trainee’s and the young people at Whitelion had the opportunity to watch the Tigers training, and then participate in clinics with them to improve their own skills. Basketball enthusiasts from the Child Protection & Juvenile Justice programs were delighted to have the opportunity to meet Andrew Gaze and play with the Tiger!

A great day was had by all – even the Tigers!

Many thanks to Medibank Private for this rare opportunity.
